MASTER PLAN & DEPARTMENT RELOCATION
This project encompasses a complete hospital intervention motivated by state-required seismic upgrades. PDA has completed detailed Master Planning for the hospital through in-depth research to facilitate the hospital’s plans for future growth and expanded services beyond 2030.
The project consists of providing seismic improvements to four of the ten buildings; new electrical infrastructure to the entire campus; relocation of the Lab in its entirety to a seismically compliant building; remodel/expansion of the emergency department; removal of non-compliant buildings and site improvements. Main seismic improvement features include new concrete shear walls at the podium level of an 8-story building being supported by tubex piles, connections to the existing roof diaphragm and dual moment frame. The building is partially embedded into a slope and has deficiencies in the lateral force resisting system, including a weak story, soft story and vertical discontinuities. Mitigation of these deficiencies gave the facility and the design team the opportunity to revise the main entry with a new canopy and landscaped gardens.
Working adjacent to sensitive programs spaces such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Surgery and Emergency Department, challenged the team for innovative ideas. The Tubex Pile System allowed 75-foot piles to be driven into the ground inside the building and within the existing 13-foot clear space. The proximity of the existing utility tunnelto the building further challenged the team to work in confined spaces. The use of ConXtech moment frames enabled the team to achieve a dual direction moment frame within a confined space and minimum cost impact to the project.
These seismic solutions resulted in a reduced impact to staff and patients during construction, with reduction in the total construction cost (8-storybuilding alone) from $40 million to $20 million, finally making it possible to save 120,000 sq. ft. of general acute care program.
